Our Faith

The Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch professes the faith of the Nicene Creed, believing in one God in three Persons— Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—one in Essence, Will, and Lordship. It affirms the mystery of the Incarnation: that the Only Son of God became truly human through the Virgin Mary by the Holy Spirit, while remaining truly divine. In Christ, divinity and humanity are united in one Person with one incarnate nature, without confusion or separation. For this reason, the Church honors the Virgin Mary as Theotokos (“Bearer of God”). Through Christ’s saving death and resurrection, humanity is reconciled with the Father. The Holy Spirit, proceeding from the Father, is fully divine and equal with the Father and the Son.

The Church is the Body of Christ, with Our Lord Jesus Christ as its Head. Divine grace is imparted through the seven Holy Sacraments—Baptism, Confirmation (Holy Mooron), Eucharist, Confession (Repentance), Priesthood, Anointing of the Sick, and Marriage—administered by bishops and priests for the sanctification and salvation of the faithful. The Syriac Orthodox Church adheres to the teachings of the first three Ecumenical Councils of Nicaea, Constantinople, and Ephesus, and does not accept the Council of Chalcedon.

Our Ecclesial Structure

The Supreme Head of the Syriac Orthodox Church is the Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, who presides over the Holy Synod. In Malankara (India), the Church is locally headed by the Catholicos of India, consecrated by and accountable to the Patriarch, the Holy Synod, and the Malankara Synod. Archdioceses/Dioceses are shepherded by Archbishops/Bishops under the Patriarch and the Holy Synod, with some serving as Patriarchal Vicarates. Parishes are served by vicars, assisted by deacons, and supported by elected parish councils.

The priesthood is ordered in three ranks: Episcopate (Patriarch, Catholicos, Archbishop, Bishop), Vicarate (Chorepiscopos and Priest), and Deaconate (Archdeacon, Deacon, Subdeacon, Reader, and Singer), united in preserving the Apostolic faith and serving the people of God.

Our Mission

Our Parish, St. Mary’s Malankara Jacobite Syriac Orthodox Church, is a community of Orthodox Christians under the direction of Archbishop, His Eminence Mor Titus Yeldo of the Malankara Archdiocese of North America. Pastored by Rev. Fr. Paul Thotakat, the parish serves the faithful in the Syriac Orthodox faith in Dallas, TX and invites all to discover the historic Christian faith. Many ministries including Sunday School are offered to keep our parishioners active in their faith and active members of the church. Worship being the soul of this community, our services are conducted in English and Malayalam (an Indian dialect). Our mission is to bring the rich history of the Syriac Orthodox Church into an everchanging and diverse American culture. We strive to provide a place of worship to people of all languages and backgrounds while observing the sacraments and ancient traditions of the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch.
